FOX network talent search, American Idol, is doing a first this season – and that is to open to online voting for the first time, starting Tuesday next week.
The votes will be cast through AmericanIdol.com via social networking website, Facebook. According to show creator, Simon Fuller, Facebook will act as the security mechanism that will verify the identities of viewers. They will be allowed to vote 50 times during a weekly window.
Online voting is a major step forward for the show, as this will certainly add a new dimension to the selection of winners.
However, FOX says that the show would still continue to accept votes via toll-free phone numbers and through text messages, courtesy of AT&T, who will also sponsor the online voting.
