A puppy or a kitten has become a popular Christmas gift in the past few years. But the well-meaning person may be doing more harm to the animal than good.
Aside from the fact that not all people are pet lovers, statistics also show that many pets which were given as gifts actually end up in a local animal shelter. This information comes from the U.S. Humane Society.
According to them, not only during the holiday season, but also during Valentine’s Day when cute pets are given as gifts for your girlfriend or boyfriend.
Humane Society supporter Harriete Lupin says “If the person normally has a lot of duties and responsibilities already going on in his or her life, then that’s generally not a good sign to give him or her a pet as a gift.”
“A pet is not like a mug or photo frame which you can just store, or a bouquet of flowers which you can just let wilt, it is a living thing which you must care and nurture. And you must carefully evaluate if the receiver can handle having a new member of the household,” she notes.
