A great number of football athletes came to the first two legs of tryouts for the national U-19 football team today in Manila. The qualified players will be trained for the Asean Football Federation Youth Championship in Myanmar which will happen in September 2011.
More than 70 players from various clubs and colleges in Metro Manila went to the NCR tryout held at the University of Makati and at the Ateneo de Manila University last Monday and Tuesday. Meanwhile, 112 hopefuls performed in the open tryouts for Luzon at the Tarlac Recreation Center in San Jose, Tarlac during the weekend.
Team manager Charlie Cojuangco says, “The turnout is an indication that there is talent in the grassroots level of Philippine football. It’s just a matter of finding the right players.”
The tryouts will eventually go to the Visayas and Mindanao, where football is more popular than in Luzon and Metro Manila.
